Gä Danmark Gä Solvang!

Day 6: Arroyo Grande --> Gaviota State Beach

Miles: 67.73 (365.9 total)
Elev. gain: 2,880 ft (20,216 total)
Pint count:  6.5 (34 total)

Day 6 was pretty mellow...just lots of biking along 101. After a very slow start where Sam and I lost at least 2 things each out of our paneers/bungee cords/etc, we had a chill ride all the way to Buellton (pronounced like Ferris Bueller, not like bweller, which Sam kept saying to all the locals). So, on the advice of just about everyone we told about this trip, we decided to take the 3-mile jaunt into Solvang, a random little Danish town in the middle of the central coast.

Here is Sam getting in touch with his Wiking ancestry:

We stopped for a couple pints at the impressively-good Solvang Brewing Company. Here it is with an old school windmill as a bonus:

And some other cute buildings that Sam thought he should take pics of:

The highlight of Solvang was the Copenhagen Sausage House, where we stopped for dinner and got a boot full of Weihenstephaner hefeweizen. That is a lot of beer.

And then we biked the 13 miles to our campground without incident.

Mom, stop reading here.

Everyone else:
Yeah this was actually insane. We kinda got stuck drinking that boot until dark, and it turned out that the 13 miles to the campground included almost 1000 ft of climbing.  About half the ride (and one of the climbs) was on this tiny country road where we didn't see another soul. The second half of the ride, and the second epic climb, was on 101. Once we got to the top, it was a solid 1000 ft drop down to the campground. So there we were, bombing down a giant hill going probably 40 mph on the side of the freeway in full dark. Yes, we had lights. Yes, it was still totally insane. Definitely a highlight of the trip.

  1. Are you tracking your ride with GPS? I want to see your route when you're done.

  4. Interesting - you stuck to Hwy 101 to Gaviota, and I (and some other people I met along the way) stuck to Hwy 1 (though oh-so-exciting Lompoc). I didn't know bikes could be on 101 at that point.
