Day 3: Sunset St. Beach --> Pfeiffer Big Sur
Miles: 68.3
Elev gain: 3,970 ft
Pint count: 7 (13 total)
If you've been checking this blog for updates the last couple days: fear not! We are alive. Sore, but alive. We've had a couple long days without much cell service, so the blog had to wait.
Day 3: we knew we were in for a tough haul on the second half of this day, since we'd be entering Big Sur at that point. But we weren't anticipating a tough ride into Monterey. So we were a little bummed out that it took us all the way until 2pm (after some randomly good donuts in Castroville) to get to our lunch date in Monterey. Where we both had Sand Dabs (still not sure what that is) for the first time. They did not disappoint.
What? I was thirsty, ok?
Special Sam moment of the day:
Riding out of Monterey, special Sam's special set up kind of exploded and his U-bolt lock fell right off. By some stroke of luck, it caught on my shoe and I carried it right over to him. I could call it great reflexes, but I'd be lying.

We had lunch with Justin, Sam's buddy from grad school. He has no balls.
After a bit of a tough climb out of Monterey and back to highway 1, we started into one of the most EPIC stretches of riding in my life. The Big Sur coastline is ridiculously dramatic. Unfortunately, pictures really don't do it justice.
We were so nervous about the second half of this day (lots of climbing), we got ourselves all psyched up and totally crushed our expected time. I took the over on the bet, which unfortunately meant that our mediocre tasting but exceptionally priced dinner was on me. (Seriously, everything in this stretch of the coast is expensive. We just saw gas for $4.65).
This is us after crushing a 500+ft climb. Or, at least, Sam crushed it. Turns out I'm slow at hills now. I blame it on living in a part of the country where the only hills are freeway ramps. Good job, Sam.

No worry here as Untappd tracking updates, more frequent and apparently not affected by connectivity, have provided assurance that at least Sam,and by comment and inference, Pat have been fine. Press on, cheers.
