How to Bike to Mexico in 10 days

Day 10: San Onofre --> San Diego

Miles: 61.61 (630.1 total)
Elev. gain: 2,139 ft (27,938 total)
Pint count:  7.5 (59 total)

We did it folks! Today we wheeled into our southernmost US destination! Fun fact - Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diago, which of course
in German means, A Whale's Vagina.

Here's our path

A few scary moments cycling down the coast - we some how ended up on i5 biking along like 12 lanes of 75 mph traffic. We weren't terribly sure it was legal so we checked after 10 mi or so. Turns out it's like kinda legal sometimes.

After a killer 400 ft climb (Torrey Pines) we had made it. So we did a good amount of brewery hopping once we got to SD. There are some DOPE BEERS down here!! We managed to hit three spots -

1. Coronado
2. Modern Times
3. Stone - Liberty Station

Yo the beers at MT are particarily dank. No joke, some of the best beers I've had PERIOD! I hadn't even heard of this place!!

The highlight of the day was certainly reconnecting with long lost Garden Level (college a cappella group) bro, Stoops. Pat hadn't seen him in about 12 days and I hadn't seen him since April. We wept and held eachother and FEASTED!! BROS AND BABES GO TO STONE FOR THEIR FOOD!! AND AIRPLANES!! The airplane bit is fun - it's right under SD airport so you get to enjoy the underbelly of the 737s flying maybe 150 yards over head, roaring over your casual convos.

Ok we saw this Inn and I almost made us stay there just cus the title.

This tickled me.

But we had arranged another couchsurfing experience, this time with the most interesting man in San Diego County - Father Ric. Sooo many stories to tell but I have to do it in person so not to get Pat in trouble.

Biking to his house however, was not super fun. It was dark and Sam the Navigator had a belly full of beer. Somehow we took a left turn and ended up on the middle of i8, a massive freeway. Going about 18 mph I hit a grate, my set up exploded, and I was almost ejected into traffic. Yikes. Luckily Pat the backseat Diver gave me enough room at my back to not run into me, pick up the pieces, and hand em to me REAL QUICK. One handed and confused, we rushed off the freeway only to be greeted by the steepest climb of our trip... about 10 degree Texas st. Fuckin Texas man. I dont know how.but we did it, and cried a little at the top.

OK friends!! We have 7 more pints to drink until we tie the record from our first trip!! Its gonna be fun bday!!

Much Love, tickle pink and thanks for reading,
SF

  1. Yeah, they don't let you go through the Marine base unless you have a special pass, which you can only get in Oceanside, so you have to ride on I5 - I'm guessing that's what you did? I had to do that.

Did you try the Kviek beers at Modern Times? They don't have them at all their locations - pretty amazing stuff.

  2. Yes that's exactly right! We met a biker who told us about the pass situation, but it was too late.

We didnt try the kviek, alas! We'll have to do that on our next tour!
