Commencment Address

Hi!

Thanks for checking out our blog! We are two recent college graduates, having attained our Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance at the University of Puget Sound.

Patrick and I have been talking about going on an epic bike adventure since we became friends in August of 2009. As starry eyed and able-bodied freshmen, we dreamed of hopping on our bikes and touring all the way down to San Francisco. Last month we decided to make it happen (to the horror of some family members).

The proposal begs the question - WHY?! My Poppy (grandfather) stated it well: this is an "idiotic, STOOOPID idea! What's wrong with your head!". Yes perhaps it is. And there are plenty of things wrong with my head. Including this nose, but that was YOUR FAULT Poppy! But here is a list of reasons why we've decided to pursue our ambitions:

1. Why not!! For Fun!
Patrick and I are both Vocal Performance majors going to graduate school to continue our studies towards a Masters in Music degree. Needless to say, it is unlikely that our choices will lead us to many significant job opportunities and lucrative career options. While we still have a little money (and financial support from mommy), this seems like the best time to take a risk like this! So why not!

2. For fitness and training!
Pat and I have both done some biking in the past, but are by NO means anymore advanced or experienced then intermediate riders. This fact became apparent pretty quickly as 50 year-olds whirled past us on our rides. I reaaaallly enjoy cycling, and I bet this trip, and the training leading up to it, will whip us into serious cycling shape. Looking forward to passing those same old people on the trails.

3. To test the bond between two friends
Like every relationship, Pat and I have had our ups...

...and downs...(I think this tiff one was girl related)

but so far we've always come out in harmony.

(got heem.)

Anyways, stay tuned!!! I'm gonna be slappin up our route details in the next day or two.

WE LEAVE JUNE 2

Much love, and Go Giants,
Sam and Pat (but mostly Sam. In fact, entirely Sam)

A note on blogging...
Following the recent internet takeover of social media websites, it has come to my attention that the blog-o-sphere is plagued by self-indulging egomaniacs who have convinced themselves that people actually care about their daily activities (my father has ever so eloquently dubbed this phenomenon, 'tweeterbation'). Nevertheless! I hope to join the ranks of posters, trollers, tubers and twatters, who have established themselves using this 21st century method of exposure! And I too, hope that you will read about our daily activities... Thanks!!

  1. Sam, reason #1 "Why not!! For Fun!" is one of the most effective rationalizations for any poorly conceived idea that you will have throughout your life and, I full endorse it's use - as I have for my many years - as it generally works out ok and in the end, if you are paying attention (Are you paying attention Sam? Sam... Sam?) you may learn something, even if is just another way to have fun.

As I followed your Mom's blog a couple of years ago on her (mostly) sans gas journeys throughout the Bay Area, I am looking forward to what I am sure will be insightful and informative postings as to your progress south. Actually, what I expect after a day or so is some reference as to the discomfort in the 'seat' area of the heroes of the story.

Good luck and remember the talc.
BTW, your Dad does realize he is a chronic tweeterbater, right?
